Local Artist - Annette Rumbelow

I have lived in Norton Bavant with my fiancé (a fellow artist) for nearly 3 years.  I paint pictures of wildlife and flowers mainly in watercolours but also using acrylics and pastels.  Let me tell you a little bit about myself, my easel is set up in our conservatory so that when the French doors are open I can hear the country sounds of wild birds, chickens and other wildlife while painting.

Ever since I was 5 years old I would always have a pencil or a paintbrush to hand, and my parents were often telling friends that “one day she will be an artist.”  Even when I was at pre-school I would come home covered in paint, and when I went to Secondary School I even painted the covers of my school books.

While I was at school I entered many competitions with my watercolour paintings, and I often won a book or gift tokens which meant that I could buy more paints or artists books to study.

During my childhood I was encouraged to paint both by my parents and teachers.  When I left school I seriously considered going to art college, however, jobs were very hard to find in those days and so I accepted a job in an Artists shop, initially as a sales assistant, and then as an art buyer.

A bit later in life I left England to live in Bermuda where I got married, and together we ran a successful business managing Tourist Accommodation apartments.  In my spare time I was still able to keep up with my artwork, and I had prints made from my original watercolour paintings and they were sold locally in a shop.

We also gave them away as gifts to some of the tourists who stayed with us.

My husband then become very ill so we left Bermuda to come back to the UK where I spent my time caring for him, so at this time in my life my painting was some where I could escape to, in my own world even if it was just for a short time.

I have worked with watercolours, acrylics, gouache, and pastels as well as using beads, glass and ribbons to add texture and substance to my paintings; however I would say my favourite medium would be watercolour.

I started out by painting miniatures, however, I now also do larger paintings (up to the size 20"x16") and sometimes even bigger. When I paint with acrylics and use beads I usually do much larger paintings on box canvases.

I have sold work at a local tearoom in Warminster and I also have some of my work on display for sale in a coffee house in Warminster called Moretons.  This year I also entered the Sutton Veny Flower Show with a single painting on three canvases each measuring 24"x 24" which won Best in Class and then went on to win Best in Show, and so I received two trophies for this piece of work.

I exhibited at the Wylye Valley Art Trail for the first time last year, and it was great to see a big selection of my artwork displayed in our Village Hall.  Since then I have been inspired to produce a series of blank cards, each with an original watercolour painting of a bird or flower on the front, which I hope to sell as either cards or with a mount for framing.

I have attached some samples of my artwork: if you are interested in any pieces or cards then please contact me by email Annette Rumbelow
