What are you listening to?

When did you last buy a CD? Do you know what music to listen to nowadays? Ever since iTunes and Napster came about it's so easy to miss out on what's new. Downloading is brilliant for old stuff but when it comes to new music how do we know what to download - here we can offer you a solution... our very own music editor will recommend the best of the latest on offer....

David Houghton recommends...

Album of the month is.. Bryan Ferry - Olympia

Wow what a return to form from Mr. Ferry! This is a fantastic album with delicate lyrics, very strong rhythm section and beautiful keyboard work by Bryan himself - not to mention excellent guitar from Oliver Thompson, Nile Rogers and David Williams with some classy David Gilmour thrown in for good measure. Even Eno shows up on this and thankfully manages not to ruin the thing. It's a hypnotic soulful album and I feel "Alphaville" and "Reason or Rhyme" are 2 of the best songs Bryan Ferry has ever recorded. "My oh My" is pretty damn good too! You can get the CD in 3 different formats, standard: which has 10 tracks; special edition: which has 2 extra cover versions; and the book CD which has amazing artwork, 2 CD's and a DVD plus lots of glossy photos of Kate Moss reclining in silk luxury - well worth the £54!
Joan As Police Woman - The Deep Field - OK so Joan Wasser is the hot new female singer/songwriter and the album is original almost eclectic music based around her keyboards plus a moog bass with some catchy tunes and very good lyrics. Joan's amusing yet naughty youtube video is worth a watch - The Magic is the single but there are better songs on the album than the single - it's a strong album. Joan plays live in Bristol on 4th February.
John Grant - Queen of Denmark - if you like folk style music with very good acoustic guitar playing and challenging lyrics this will be your thing! I have to admit that I am not sure what John is going on about half the time but it sounds like he means it and there is obviously much fire raging in there. Well worth a listen.
Neil Young - Le Noise - on first hearing I wasn't sure about this album, but it has grown on me - it's a slow burner and "The Hitchhiker" is a great personal song reflecting upon Neil's life. The whole album centres around "Love and War" and it could have been called that, I think, but as it's just Neil plus his guitars then Le Noise is probably more suitable! A late night CD with red wine and candles man.
Santana - Guitar Heaven - if you love classic rock guitar - you'll love this one. Great covers album including "Whole Lotta Love", "Smoke on the Water", "Riders on the Storm", "Get It On" - or the American version "Bang a Gong".

David Houghton

David Houghton - is releasing "Celebrate the Weird!!!" soon.
My own album "Celebrate The Weird" is about to be complete - at long last!! The artwork for the 16 page CD booklet has taken many Skype calls to the US to my designer Matthew Lane who has done a great job and it will be ready for publication this month. Jon & Lena of Turtlereality are working hard on the new website and I think we will be ready for launch in March. Zenga! is no more, by the way, he refused to leave a bar in Vegas and is still there as far as I know. So it's just me now folks! I will be hiring the village hall for a CD pre launch party sometime late March - pre performing in Bath, Bristol & London this year I do hope you can all make it! Stay Crazy!! - David
