Interview with David Houghton

Here's our first interview with the one and only 'Rock Star' in the Village:

Thank you for agreeing to be on our first interview page. Let's hope it's not too painful! Now, we know that you spend a lot of your spare time writing songs. How long have you been involved in music and song writing?   David
I wrote an album called "Scream For Freedom" back in 1985, it was a reflection upon London and a bit Style Council like - I was taken aback by the huge amount of wealth concentrated in the capital and that combined with thoughts upon my failed attempts at relationships with various girls was enough to inspire the songs! I actually recorded it - just me and an acoustic guitar - in a studio in Bayswater - the engineer was very understanding! Then I had to deal with a lot of stress working for a very difficult client in London and a number of songs appeared from the subconscious and they made up the "Beyond Deranged" album in 2004, this was recorded at a friends garage studio. So then I followed this up with a professional studio album "Can You See The Light?" in 2005 recorded at Riverside Studios in Bath which is where I am currently recording "Celebrate The Weird!!!"
Your poetry on the website is extremely good, do you find it easier to write lyrics or to come up with a tune?
Thank you and yes it's much easier for me to write the lyrics. I have lots of poems/lyrics and some are very obviously poems and some could be songs if I could just understand what they really mean! The songs that work best are the ones where the lyrics and the rhythm structure is immediate, all the songs I have recorded have been like that.
How long have you lived in Norton Bavant and what's the biggest buzz you've had since living here?   Tell us something about yourself that no one knows?
10 years, sometimes stuff happens either by accident or it's impromptu - those are the best things although I remember flying back from India and just bowling up to a Sausage & Mash night in the Village Hall; whereupon I was greeted not only by the wife but by many folks as some sort of returning hero!! Our local Mayor (Gordy) just plonked a whole bottle of red wine in front of me and I realised - this is home!   I do have lows that I never share as it would be really boring.

"Sometimes stuff happens,

or it's impromptu..."

What would you miss the most if you moved away?   I'm sure there are a few, but tell us about your best Village memory?
The people and the quiet. Having lived all over the UK this place is special for me as it is so quiet and the surrounding countryside enables a feeling of peacefulness which is very different from city life.   It was probably the gig I did at Langley's Gore... er your place now - it was a big event for me and we made £600 for the victims of the tube bombings in London from it.
What's your favourite breakfast beverage?   Where is the most interesting place you have visited?
Tea - more recently Rooibos.   Los Angeles (West Hollywood) - by a long way.
Describe your perfect Saturday in the Village? Name the one thing you'd like to do before you die?
Early morning swim at Bishopstrow / breakfast in the garden here then into Bath for some shopping / then host a dinner party of some sort or go to a gig somewhere. Have some music business appreciation for my next album! www.zengaweb.com
