Interview with Maybelline

Maybelline - student, singer & dancer has recently performed in 'Annie' at the Athenaeum

Congratulations on your recent performance in the Musical 'Annie' at the Athenaeum in Warminster. Tell us a little bit about the character you played and how you won the part?

I played Tessie, one of the 6 main orphans who share a room with Annie.  Tessie is the nervous and scared one.  I had many lines but in almost every sentence I said “Oh my goodness”.  40 girls auditioned in August hoping to be Annie or an orphan and 12 (2 groups of 6 main orphans) got given the parts, plus 2 Annies were chosen.

How long have you been rehearsing for this role? And how many performances were there?

We rehearsed for 6 weeks and then did 6 performances (3 for each group of orphans and Annie).

"we raised £260 by singing..."

Did you enjoy performing on stage and is it something you would like to do more of in the future?

Yes! I love performing on stage and it is something that I would consider doing as a profession.

How did you spend Friday preparing yourself before your performance? Were you nervous, excited?

Before the first performance I was excited and nervous but by the second performance (on Friday) I was just excited.

We all know you have a great voice, but which do you prefer singing or acting?
I like doing both which is why I really enjoy doing musicals ... plus a bit of dancing!

Was this your first public appearance? And tell us how it felt to be performing on stage at the Athenaeum?

No. I have performed in several shows at the Athenaeum and one at the Woolstore and also in school plays at Primary School (where I won the drama cup in year 6).  The Athenaeum is quite a big theatre but from the stage you can only see the first few rows so you don’t know who is watching!

"I really liked it and loved being in the productions..."

You also gave a performance at the Mayor’s reception late on Friday night; which was the most rewarding being on stage or singing for the Mayor?

Both were rewarding in different ways.  The Mayor’s reception helped the Athenaeum charities to raise extra much needed money.  All the Mayor’s guests were very generous in their donations and we raised £260 by singing for them after the show finished on Friday night.

How did you first become interested in the Performing Arts?

Ever since I was about 5 when I went to a drama group after school I really liked it and loved being in the productions they put on.  When I was about 6 I was given a microphone from the Early Learning Centre and that really started me off performing and singing!

Do you have any more upcoming projects, if so, tell us where we can look forward to seeing you again?

I am auditioning this weekend for the local pantomime “Dick Whittington” which will take place at the Athenaeum at February half term.

How are you planning to fulfil your acting / singing dream once you’ve finished studying?

I would like to go to a performing arts college and hope to get spotted!! (You’d better get my autograph now!).

And, finally, what would your dream role be?

I’d like to be a main part in a musical or would like to star in a James Bond style film with lots of action.

Would you like to be interviewed for the Village People page? Do you have something interesting to say? If so let us know.
